Health & Beauty Profile
Health & Beauty Profile By Julie Jacobs, photos provided by Dan Epstein and Dr. Scott Spiro Plastic surgeon Scott Spiro, MD, FACS Plastic Surgeon's Calling Changes Lives M illions of women have tried—and failed—to reshape their figures through crash diets, nonstop exercising, hypnosis, and a slate of desperate measures. Yet they're still unhappy with what they see in the mirror. But instead of berating themselves or feeling like failures, many of these women are simply taking a new approach: plastic surgery. "Today's women are much more willing to make changes in their appearance that good nutrition and fitness can't accomplish," says plastic surgeon Scott Spiro, MD, FACS. And Dr. Spiro—who specializes in cosmetic surgery of the breast, breast cancer reconstruction, body contouring, and facial aesthetic surgery— should know. e board-certified plastic surgeon has performed some 10,000 procedures—including breast reductions, augmentations and lifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction, to name just a few—on women of all ages. e increased openness to surgery is partly thanks to "the sophistication of techniques and improvement in overall patient safety," Dr. Spiro points out, which, in addition to improvements in anesthesia, "have allowed more procedures to be performed during a single surgery and with more predictable outcomes," the doctor says. For example, advances such as fat grafting, facial fillers like Restylane® and Juvéderm®, and FDA-reapproved silicone implants "would have been considered science fiction as little as 15 years ago," the doctor notes. Today they are part of Dr. Spiro's extensive apparatus at his West Orange practice, where he's been a trusted surgeon for the Body of Work past 14 years. (His office also features a medical spa called Regeneration, which employs a full-time skincare specialist for facial aesthetics.) Because no two patients are exactly alike, Dr. Spiro develops tailored treatment plans that guarantee excellent results. ose results have prompted his inclusion in New Jersey Monthly's Best Doctors listing and the Consumers' Research Council of America's Guide to America's Top Surgeons, as well as testimonials citing his artistic talent, compassion, and attention to detail. Such attention has been a mainstay of Dr. Spiro's work—a career he knew he wanted to pursue as a young teenager with a voracious interest in both art and science. He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and then "Every patient is like living art." as general surgery and plastic surgery residents. When he's not picking up a scalpel, Dr. Spiro often can be found putting pencil (and oil paints) to paper. He has illustrated medical book chapters, informational brochures, and journal articles.
