Discover tips on changing your health and beauty regimen to meet the changing season.

Health & Beauty By Julie Jacobs Your Fall Beauty Guide SHIFT YOUR REGIMEN WITH THE SEASON utumn is here, and just as the leaves change with the crisp, cooler weather, so, too, should your health and beauty regimen. It's time to shift into fall, so here are some tips to get you started: HAIR e season's drier air and lower temperatures can translate into split ends and static electricity, especially after months of exposure to the bright sun, pool chemicals, and ocean salt. To repair the damage, take a little olive oil and comb through your hair from root to tip. You can also apply an over-the-counter deep conditioner or try a salon treatment. Got static in your tresses? Apply a leave-in conditioner and occasionally let your hair air-dry, skipping the towel and blow dryer. A MAKEUP e fall hues are a good guide for cosmetics. Add color to your face with warm, earthy tones. Use dark brown shades for brows, lids, and lashes. For cheeks, skip the blush and opt for a bronzer instead. And try deeper mattes in reds and purples on your lips, replacing the pink glosses of summer. For a more minimal look, go neutral with beiges and nudes. DIET Good nutrition is always the key to feeling and looking your best, so stick with fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, and whole grains— all energy-boosting foods that pick you up when the daylight hours diminish and sluggishness sets in. Also, take advantage of the season's great healthy fare—like squashes, cherry tomatoes, blackberries, and wide variety of apples. Use root vegetables to make hot, broth-based soups that soothe the nasal passages and throat. Soup, along with garlic, orange juice, and tea, can also help ward off the flu. SKIN e fall zaps your skin of moisture, so stay hydrated inside and out. Drink plenty of water and apply a moisturizer every day (cream-based products are best, unless you suffer from acne). Consider a humidifier once the heat kicks on, which dries your skin along with the air. Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, and use a mild cleansing soap. And don't forget about sunscreen—you'll still need it, but you can go with a lower SPF. LIPS AND NAILS Apply lip balm with UV protection to avoid sunburned or chapped lips. Fancy lip treatments are nice, but basic petroleum-based products like Vaseline generally work just as well, according to Consumer Reports. And treat your nails to nourishing oils to avoid splitting and cracking. EXERCISE Autumn air is perfect for invigorating exercises like walks, hikes, and bicycling. Even raking the leaves can enhance cardiovascular health, but don't overdo it unless you're already in tip-top shape. Dress in layers in materials that keep perspiration away from your body to avoid a chill. s Find more information at: associatedcontent.com, ehow.com, ivillage.com, eatwell.gov.uk, amagazines.com, nutrition.suite101.com, articlesbase.com, ConsumerReports.org. 48 Vicinity MAGAZinE October 2009
