In the Marketplace
In The Marketplace By Deborah Bebb, photos by Dan Epstein Designs to Turn Heads—and Spark Touch of Envy E velyn Shallo developed a passion for design at a very early age. By nine, she was accompanying her mom on trips to flea markets, where they'd browse for antiques and crafts by local artisans. When Shallo wasn't searching for treasures with her mom, she often accompanied her father to job sites for his construction company. "From a very early age, I saw how these two worlds could come together," she says, "creating amazing spaces for people to live and work." at vision took shape when Shallo opened Interior Motives, a high-end design studio in Flemington, with an 8,500-square-foot showroom packed with everything from accessories to armoires, kitchen furniture to a home's finishing touches. Upstairs is arranged in vignettes with furniture from some of the best manufacturers— Century Furniture, eodore Alexander, Maitland Smith and Sherrill Furniture, among others. Downstairs is filled with plumbing fixtures, tile, carpets and custom window coverings. Just outside is Interior Motives' sister business, Exterior Motives, with 10,000 square feet of patio show space, including cabanas, fire pits, fountains, planters and outdoor furniture for casual living. "Inside or out, there's something to spark everyone's imagination," Shallo says. But the heart of Interior Motives is its design staff, including Shallo and four other designers. Each client is matched with a particular designer, based on style and personality. Next, the client can expect a home visit for the designer to get a feel for how the new room will flow with the rest of the house—and to learn what the client wants. "We really get to know our clients," Shallo says. "We need to understand if the room will mostly be reserved for entertaining or if it's going to be at the heart of family life." After the home visit, designers bring everyone's ideas to life, either by creating CAD drawings or traditional design boards. " e goal is to help the client find his or her style and give him or her a feel for how the room will come together," Shallo explains. But no matter what the client's looking for, or what size the budget, the owner says Interior Motives can help create a space she'll love—at a price that can compete with or beat do-it-yourselfers. By dealing directly with manufacturers and having subcontractors on staff, Shallo can give her clients the best without the normal large mark-up—and that includes the 70 percent of clients who opt for custom-made furnishings. She states that most clients save money in the long run by using Interior Motives. With a budget in place, the only real challenge is choosing from the stunning assortment of fabrics, fixtures, flooring and more. But with the help of Interior Motives' designers, the process is enjoyable—which makes for beautiful rooms that leave a lasting impression. e company's motto sums it up: "Our job is to make your neighbors jealous," Shallo says.
