PREPARING,Not Scaring, STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE Private & Independent Schools Take the Personal Approach By Matt Potter W hen it comes to entering the job market, one predictor of success stands cap and gown above the rest. And And it has nothing to do with a person's good looks, looks, family connections or networking skills. It's a college degree. According to U.S. Census Department figures, college graduates earn almost twice as much as those with only a high school diploma—$51,206 a year versus $27,915. ose with advanced degrees make an average of $74,602. But But if the stakes are high, so is the competition. An astounding 19 million students attended the nation's 4,300 colleges and universities last year, according to a Boston Globe Globe report. Faced with such figures, more families are drawn to private and independent high schools, attracted by the promise of a targeted education that fully prepares students for college—and, just as importantly, helps them gain admission to to their university of choice.
